I grew up in an economically poor and politically opressive and unstable environment (Japanese colonial rule, the Second World War, Korean War).The educational system mirrorred such a society (books were scare, pencils were used down to the one-inch length, and classes were often cancelled), but I was determined to learn, asI did not want to let the poor environment be an excuse for ignorance.Now in the States, it saddens me to see many people not realize and make use of excellent opportunities they have, for I believe that in the presence of excellence, mediocrity is a sin.
